Located on Rt. 8 about a quarter-mile west of “The Four Corners” in the Village of Speculator, the Town of Lake Pleasant Public Library received its charter in 2002. Previously books were housed in the original town hall (now the local museum), a one-room building with no official connection to a library system. Volunteers turned the former health center into a new library, which was soon bursting at its seams.

In the spring of 2004, Camp Fowler, associated with the Reformed Church in America, celebrated its 50th anniversary and, as part of the celebration, committed funds and volunteers to build an addition. Together with local volunteers and additional funding from the Town of Lake Pleasant and Friends of the Library, the addition was completed by Labor Day 2004. Caller The Fowler Wing, it housed the new Children’s Room and Adirondack Reading / Meeting Room.

By 2013 it was apparent more space was needed, and in June of 2015 ground was broken for an ambitious expansion and renovation, completed in 2018. The library is now totally handicapped-accessible with both a large meeting room with audio/video and a small meeting room, an enlarged Children’s Room, at least twice as much room for shelving books, more computer stations, a new circulation desk (thank you International Paper Co.), a gazebo where Wi-Fi is available, and more.

Our Friends of the Library group meets monthly. Book sales are held periodically and donations of saleable books are gratefully accepted.

Currently our library contains over 11,000 books with a special collection dedicated to the Adirondacks. Our materials include books, audio and videocassettes, CDs and magazines and historical local newspapers. The CD collection contains audio CDs as well as a wide assortment of adult, children and informational CDs. The library also offers numerous free programs.

Automation has been fully implemented with patrons having the opportunity to view the collections of all libraries in the Southern Adirondack Library System and the Mohawk Valley Library System (SALS/MVLS). If Lake Pleasant Library does not have a specific title, an Inter-Library Loan program allows us to search for the item and obtain it for the patron. Our computer access allows patrons to search an index of over 6,000 magazines and journals. Patrons can access this information as well as our “card catalog” from home by going to the SALS website at www.sals.edu. Go to http://www.sals.edu/libpacs/lkppublic2.shtml for on-line research, data bases and library catalog.

Free library cards are issued to anyone requesting one. A card is good for 5 years and can be used at any library within the SALS/MVLS system. A valid driver’s license or other proof of a valid address is required. Children may also obtain library cards. Internet access is free to anyone having a SALS/MVLS card. We also offer a wireless connection which can be used in close proximity to the library, as well as a copying and fax service at a nominal charge.
