Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps was organized in 1970, and has been serving the Town of Lake Pleasant and the Village of Speculator ever since. It currently has 27 members - three Certified First Responders, 14 Basic EMTs, one Paramedic, one Critical Care Technician and eight motor vehicle operators. The Corps is a fully volunteer agency; its sole source of income is voluntary contributions. There is never a charge for services rendered, no members are paid for their services, and no local tax monies are used for its operation. The Corps is fully certified by the New York State Department of Health. It has a lengthy transport time for patients – the nearest hospital is 45 miles away! Helicopter transport is being increasingly utilized for major trauma incidents, and provides a transport time of some 22 minutes to Albany Medical Center.
